Greece and Marine: Two identical concepts

I am very honored to have attended the Mare Forum 2019, thanks to the kind invitation offer of Mr George Tsavliris. It was really impressive for me, especially because I come from a different sector: from the educational field. BUT I was pleasantly surprised because I have heard Mrs Pilides, the Deputy Minister of Shipping Ministry of Shipping in Cyprus, talking about the Blue Growth and the need to invest in education. I wish to hear soon the same targets from the Greek Mister of Education and the Greek Minister of Shipping!

Because here in Greece we have at least 3 facts to face:

First, the words Greece and Marine are identical in the culture and the soul of Greeks, as Mr Xiradakis has clearly stated during his presentation.

Second, the numbers are merciless: one out of 3 students are dropping out of Maritime Academies because of the conditions in which the students live in Academies, despite other reasons. Mr Papagianopoulos explicitly stated during his presentation: we need large Maritime Academies!

And third, as a teacher I must point out that Change is strongly connected with another word, the most crusial one for the future: the word Children (these two words have the same two first letters in common).

That’s why we need to educate young children even from the kindergarden, and we need to inspire and to reinforce the love of the marine life in the sea. Because the Mariner is a demanding profession, which requires -besides knowledge- soft skills, like clevereness, creativity, responsibility.

Maybe

  1. projects like “Adopt A Ship” in primary schools, which is already running in 5 primary schools, thanks to the private action of Project Connect, and
  2. an implementation of educational programs in the floating museum-ship “Hellas Liberty”, which can also reinforce the interest for the Greek history and the timeless contribution of the Greek marine in Greece,

might be some crucial parts of the answer to the challenging future of Greece.

Besides, as Mr Buamin said: “We must look beyond!”

Greatefully,
